(8권 4호) 베트남전쟁기 한국군 태권도교관단의 파병과 역할_이신재

한국 태권도의 역사에서 베트남전쟁 당시 한국군 태권도교관단의 파병은 특별한 의미를 지닌다. 그러나 태권도 연구의 양적 풍족함에도 불구하고 태권도교관단의 베트남파병과 활동에 대한 논의는 충분하지 못했다. 이 연구는 베트남전쟁시기 한국군 태권도의 파병과정과 활동, 그리고 전장에서의 역할에 대해 고찰하는데 목적이 있다. 베트남전쟁기간 한국군 태권도교관의 참전은 1964년 10명으로 시작되었다. 그러나 이후 주월한국군사령부 직할부대로 태권도교관단이 편성되고 규모가 확대되면서 1973년 3월 철군 때까지 참전 연인원은 총 728명에 달했다. 배치지역도 사이공의 전쟁지도부를 비롯해 4개 군단 전 지역에 일종의 ‘점조직’으로 배치되어 단순히 주둔지역 만을 놓고 본다면 일반전투부대와 비교할 수 없을 정도로 넓었다. 또 태권도 지도의 대상도 남베트남 군인뿐만 아니라, 경찰, 사관생도, 민간인, 학생 등 다양했으며, 캄보디아 군인도 포함되었다. 파병기간 지도한 수련인원은 총 229,913명이고, 유단자는 2,916명이 배출되었다. 베트남전쟁기 한국군 태권도교관단의 역할은 전쟁수행의 수단 측면과 한국형 군사원조의 시초라는 측면에서 평가할 수 있다. 비록 총을 들고 적과 싸우는 조직은 아니었지만, 전쟁수행 수단으로서 민사작전, 첩보수집, 대적 심리전, 베트남 현지의 한국민 보호수단의 역할을 수행했다. 또 태권도교관단의 태권도 기술전수는 베트남에 국한되지 않고, 캄보디아로 확대되었던 역사적 사실은 한국군이 해외에 제공한 첫 번째 군사원조로서 한국형 군사원조의 시초이자 모델로 평가할 수 있다. 베트남전쟁에서 태권도의 역할은 현재도 충분히 활용될 수 있다는 점에서 우리에게 시사하는 바가 크다. 앞으로도 후속연구를 통해 태권도 역사에서 한국군 태권도의 베트남 파병에 대한 온전한 자리매김과 제대로 된 역사적 평가가 내려지길 기대한다.

In the history of Korean taekwondo, the dispatch of Korean Taekwondo instructors at the time of the Vietnam War has a special meaning. However, despite the quantitative abundance of Taekwondo research, discussions about Taekwondo instructor's dispatch and activities in Vietnam were not enough. The purpose of this study is to examine the process and activities of Taekwondo dispatch during the Vietnam war and its role in battlefield. Korean Taekwondo instructor's dispatch began with ten personnels in 1964. But since then, Taekwondo instructor unit have been organized as direct section of the Korean military command in Vietnam and the number of personnel has increased. The total of personnel dispatched was 728. The area where the instructors were deployed were the war command center of Saigon and all corps of Vietnam forces. This is like "dot-organization". And it was incomparably large compared with the general combat troops. They taught Taekwondo not only for soldiers, but also for police, cadets, civilians, students, and other classes, including Cambodian soldiers. There were 229,913 Taekwondo trainees and 2,916 grade-holder during dispatch period. The role of the Korean military Taekwondo instructors in the Vietnam war can be evaluated in terms of the means of conducting war and the beginning of Korean military assistance. Although it was not an organization to fight the enemy with guns, it served as means of civil affairs operations, intelligence gathering, anti-psychological warfare, and means of protecting whom the Korean persons in Vietnam. In addition, Taekwondo instructor's transfer of skills is not limited to Vietnam, but to Cambodia. It is the first overseas military assistance provided by ROK military forces. The role of Taekwondo in the Vietnam war will be a great reference for us in that it can be fully utilized today. It is expected that military Taekwondo instructor unit dispatch and role during the Vietnam war was made proper historical evaluation in the Korean Taekwondo history.
