(7권 4호) 태권도를 통한 평화, 그 가능성의 숙고

이 글의 궁극적인 목적은 태권도를 통해 평화로운 세상이 만들어 질 수 있을지의 가능여부를 다각적으로 가늠해 보는 것이다. 이에 대한 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 개인적 차원에서 태권도는 직접 및 간접체험을 통해 카타르시스를 분출시켜준다. 아울러 태권도 정신의 사람됨의 가장 내면적 차원을 함양시켜 주기 때문에 태권도를 수련하는 개인은 한 차원 높은 단계로 성숙하게 되어 마음의 평온을 얻게 된다. 둘째, 사회적 차원에서 볼 때 태권도가 추구해온 ‘개방적 원리’는 문화가 다르고, 피부색 또는 언어가 다르며, 정치적 성향에 차이가 있을지라도 문화공존을 통해 사람들을 하나로 묶어 줌으로써 불필요한 갈등과 대립을 줄여주고 상호 이해할 수 있는 계기를 마련해 줌으로써 평화에 기여할 수 있다. 셋째, 국제적 차원에서 태권도는 보편성을 지닌 전 세계인의 공통어로서 사람들을 만날 수 있는 매개체가 된다. 이렇게 볼 때 태권도는 여러 국제 조직들의 단합과 이해를 촉진시켜주고, 나눔과 봉사를 실천하며, 인류사회의 평화와 상생에 기여함으로써 국가 간 상호이해를 증진시키고 있다. 이상의 내용을 종합해 볼 때, 태권도는 하나의 몸동작에서 시작되지만 심신의 수련을 통해 수련자 모두가 마음을 나누고 가치를 공유함으로써 서로 융화되어 국가, 인종, 종교, 이념의 벽을 넘어 사람과 사람간의 소통을 가능하게 해주는 ‘실천철학’이라고 할 수 있다.

The ultimate purpose this paper is to examine from various perspectives the possibility of bringing peace to the world through Taekwondo. The result of the study is as follows. First, at personal level, Taekwondo helps relieve catharsis through direct and indirect experience and the spirit of Taekwondo cultivates the innermost side of personality and develops it to a step further so brings peace in mind. Second, at social level, the ‘open principle’ that developed with Taekwondo connects people of different cultures, skin colors, languages, political tendencies though cultural coexistence, reduces unnecessary conflicts and confrontations, and provides chances to understand one another. Third, at international level, Taekwondo, as a common language with universality, serves as a medium that helps people around the world meet with each other. As can be seen from above, Taekwondo promotes unity and understanding of various international organizations, practices sharing and volunteer work, contributes to peace and coexistence of human society, and enhances mutual understanding among nations. To sum up, Taekwondo starts from one movement but it can be called a practical philosophy that helps share minds through training and harmonize with one another, and enables communications among people beyond nationality, race, religion, and ideology.
