(9권 1호) 태권도의 유개념으로서 ‘무예’와 ‘무도’_김영선·여인성

최근 국기원은 태권도의 주요 유개념으로 ‘무도’ 대신 ‘무예’ 명칭을 채택했다. 그런데 왜 ‘무예’가 ‘무도’ 보다 태권도의 유개념으로 적절한지 국기원 자료뿐 아니라 논문에서조차 그 이유에 대한 설명을 찾아보기가 어렵다. 따라서 이 연구의 목적은 그 이유와 그 타당성을 밝힘으로써 태권도의 정체성과 표준화의 확립에 일조하는 데 있다. 본 연구자는 ‘무예’란 유개념의 정당성을 확보하기 위해 철학적 분석과 역사적 접근 방법을 통해 다음 다섯 가지 이유들을 파악하고 제안하였다. 첫째, ‘무예’ 단어에는 한국 전통성이 깃들어 있기 때문이다. 둘째, 무예는 전통무예 택견과의 개념적 연결성을 강화시켜 주기 때문이다. 셋째, 근래 태권도의 전개 양상이 무예적 개념과 합치되기 때문이다. 넷째, 무예의 개념은 역동적인 한국 문화 이미지로서 최근 태권도의 경향에 부합되기 때문이다. 다섯째, 무예에는 무도 못지않은 정신철학성이 내재되어 있기 때문이다. 반면 ‘무도’란 용어에는 다음 다섯 가지 부정적 개념과 사례들이 얽혀 있다. 첫째, 개념의 난해성. 둘째, 이상주의와 현실과의 괴리. 셋째, 일본 전통문화와 공교육 과목으로서 무도. 넷째, 무도사상의 근원으로서 무사도의 폐단. 다섯째, 일본 군국주의에 뿌리를 둔 총검도의 무도 편입과 2017년 중학교 교육과정 채택 등 문제점으로 인해 태권도를 정의하는 유개념으로는 부적합하다고 판단되었다. 이와 같은 이유와 근거를 토대로 ‘무도’보다 ‘무예’가 태권도의 주된 유개념으로 정착되어야 할 것이다.

Kukkiwon has recently adopted ‘martial art(Muye, 무예, 武藝)’ instead of 'martial way(Mudo, 무도, 武道)' as a major generic concept in its definition of Taekwondo. However no reasonable explanation concerning why the term ‘martial art(Muye)’ is more appropriate than ‘martial way(Mudo)’ can be found in Kukkiwon materials, including academic papers. Thus, the purpose of this study was to support the establishment of this generic concept of ‘martial art’ in order to validate and standardize the definition of Taekwondo, and to provide legitimacy for this definition. To define, clarify and legitimize ‘martial art’ as Taekwondo’s generic concept, the author has established five justifications based on philosophical analysis and an historical approach. First, the term ‘martial art’ not only describes what Taekwondo is but also represents Korean traditionalism. Second, the term ‘martial art’ reinforces Taekwondo’s conceptual connection with the Korean traditional martial art of ‘Taekkyeon’. Third, the recent development of Taekwondo aligns with and satisfies its conceptualization as a martial art. Fourth, the idea of martial art reflects and shares common characteristics with Korea’s dynamic culture. Lastly, a spiritual philosophy of ‘martial art(Muye)’ is on par with that of ‘martial way(Mudo)’. This study discussed five reasons why ‘martial way(Mudo)’ cannot be a generic concept of Taekwondo. The first is the esotericism associated with ‘martial way’; second, the serious gap between idealism and reality in ‘martial way’; third, ‘martial way’ is widely regarded as an aspect of the traditional culture of Japan and was adopted as a required subject in Japanese public education; fourth, the negative connotations of Bushido(Way of the Samurai) as the source of ‘martial way’; and fifth, one aspect of ‘martial way’, ‘Jukendo(銃劍道, the way of the bayonet)’ that connotes Japanese militarism and was adopted as a subject in Japanese middle school in 2017, lacks the concept of righteousness. Based on the discussion and reasons provided, ‘martial art’, not ‘martial way,’ should be recognized as a major generic concept of Taekwondo.
