Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the difference of the range of motion (ROM) and isokinetic strength of lower extremity in Taekwondo Poomsae players, competition players and trainees. Total 21 participants with more than 5 years of Taekwondo career were selected for this study, and were divided into 3 groups - Taekwondo Poomsae player group (n=7), Taekwondo competition player group (n=7), Taekwondo trainee group (n=7). Finally selected Taekwondo Poomsae and competition players were limited to those with over 3 years of career. Study Participants’ body composition, ROM and isokinetic muscle strength of lower extremity were measured. One-way ANOVA was conducted to analyze differences in the 3 groups. Least significant difference (LSD) was carried out for post-hoc test in case significant differences were found in the 3 groups. The significant level was p<.05. The main findings of study are as follows: the ROM of hip flexion was significantly higher in the TPG than in the TCG and TTG (dominant and non-dominant). On the ROM of hip extension of the dominant side, the TCG was significantly higher than the TTG. On the dominant side, the ROM of hip abduction was significantly higher in the TTG than other two groups. On the non-dominant side, the ROM of hip abduction was significantly higher in the TTG than the TCG. No differences were observed in isokinetic peak torque %BW at 60°/sec of hip abduction among the 3 groups. In hip adduction, isokinetic peak torque %BW at 60°/sec was significantly lower than two groups (dominant and non-dominant). No differences were observed in isokinetic peak torque %BW at 60°/sec of knee extension and flexion among the 3 groups. On the dominant and non-dominant sides, the isokinetic total work %BW at 240°/sec of knee flexion and extension was significantly higher in the TPG than in the other groups. In conclusion, the differences of hip ROM and isokinetic muscle strength of hip and ankle in Taekwondo Poomsae players, competition players, and trainees were identified. Our study results will be helpful in setting exercise programs for Taekwondo players. Further studies are recommended considering players’ technical levels and forms of training to help them further improve the competing ability.
