태권도는 세계화에 성공한 한국의 무예이다. 기존 연구들은 성공한 이유를 해외진출 사범들의 헌신적 공로, 태권도관련 조직의 역할과 활동, 한국 정부의 적극적 지원, 스포츠화 노력 등에서 찾았다. 이러한 설명은 설득력이 있지만 충분하지 못하다. 여기에는 태권도 자체의 장점과 특징에 대한 규명이 빠져있기 때문이다. 이 연구는 침입생물학의 관점에서 태권도 자체의 장점과 특징을 규명하였다. 침입생물학적 연구에 따르면 침입에 성공한 생물은 ‘천적 부재’와 ‘다양한 정보를 지닌 유전인자’라는 두 가지 특징을 갖고 있었다. 이 생물학적 특징들은 경쟁상대가 없을 정도의 ‘독특성’과 다양한 환경의 요구를 충족시켜 줄 수 있는 ‘필수적 다양성’이라는 문화적 특징들로 해석될 수 있다. 태권도는 다른 무예들과 비교할 때 이 두 가지 특징들을 잘 갖춘 문화현상이다. 첫째, 태권도기술은 그 어떤 무예와도 비교할 수 없을 정도로 빠르며 역동적이라는 점에서 독특하다. 태권도는 기존 무예에서 당연시했던 몇 가지 루틴들을 탈피하고 파괴함으로써 이와 같은 역동성을 얻게 되었다. 겨루기에서 시작된 기술의 역동화는 경기와 시범을 통해 더욱 탄력을 얻었으며, 최근에는 품새에서도 그 힘을 발휘하고 있다. 둘째, 태권도는 다양한 환경의 요구를 충족시킬 수 있는 필수적 다양성을 갖추고 있다. 태권도가 필수적 다양성을 갖추게 된 주된 원인은 취약한 전통에 있다. 강한 전통은 문화현상을 폐쇄적으로 만드는 반면 약한 전통은 개방적으로 만들기 때문이다. 개방적이라는 말은 이질적 요소들을 흡수하여 자기 것으로 만든다는 의미이다. 이 같은 과정을 통해 태권도는 필수적 다양성을 갖추게 되었다. 기술의 독특성과 필수적 다양성은 태권도의 성공적 세계화를 가능하게 만들어준 주요 동인이다.

Taekwondo is a martial art that has succeeded in globalization. Researchers have long been interested in the reasons that Taekwondo is globalized successfully. The efforts of masters in the foreign lands, the role of organizations, the support of the Korean government and the sportization have suggested as the reasons. This explanation is convincing but not enough to define the reasons because of the lack of the discussion about characteristics of Taekwondo itself. This study focused on identifying the characteristics. Invasion biology was chosen as the theoretical resource. Successful invasive organisms have two characteristics: absence of natural enemies and genetic factor with various information. These biological traits can be interpreted as cultural features of uniqueness and requisite diversity. Taekwondo is a unique cultural phenomenon with exceptionally dynamic skills and a rich cultural diversity that can cope with environmental changes flexibly. Firstly, Taekwondo skills are fast and dynamic. The dynamics expressed in the sparring is promoted through the demonstration and competitions, including Poomsae. In addition, Taekwondo has the requisite diversity to meet demands from various environment. One of the main reasons why Taekwondo has the requisite diversity is it’s weak tradition. The cultural phenomenon which has strong tradition is closed to it’s environment. But the cultural phenomenon which has weak tradition is opened. The expression ‘open to the environment’ means to absorb the heterogeneous elements into oneself. Through such the inclusive process, Taekwondo has the requisite diversity. The uniqueness of skills and the requisite diversity are an agent of Taekwondo's successful globalization.
